Teenager is now 'Stable'

Thursday, 21st October 2004.

A teenager left fighting for his life after a hit and run accident was taken off the critical condition list on Tuesday.

His condition was described as stable.

Lewis Smith, aged 19, was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital after the collision in the early hours of Sunday, October 10th at Barnadiston.

His family has kept a constant bedside vigil, and anxiously awaited his return from the operating theatre last Thursday when he received surgery to his two broken legs, as well as to injuries to his face and neck.

His sister Becky, 22, who has been at the hospital with her parents Shayne and Alison, said doctor's had been pleased with Lewis' progress and decided to go ahead with the surgery.

Lewis remains in the neuro intensive care unit in an induced coma, to relieve the severe pressure on his brain caused by the serious head injuries he received.

"Obviously they would not have done the surgery if they did not think he was strong enough to take it," Becky said.

A 30 year old man from Haverhill was arrested over the incident.
