Swimmers Show Community Spirit

Thursday, 8th September 2005.

Swimmers at Haverhill Leisure Centre have raised £1,198.80 by taking part in Butlins Swimathon for childrens charity, NCH.

The money raised will help fund local NCH centres, enabling them to continue to support vulnerable children, young people and their families in the local community.

Lesley Cowie, sports development manager at he centre said: "We are absolutely thrilled that so many local people gave their time and energy to swim for NCH. It just goes to show the true spirit of our community and how willing people are to help others. We're already looking forward to an even bigger turnout for Swimathon 2006 next March."

Richard Bates, Butlins operations director, said: "I would like to congratulate everyone who swam and helped to raise money. Like NCH, Butlins is about making children smile, and we are proud that the swimathon, which is a fun event for the whole family, has contributed so much to such a worthy cause."

Seventy per cent of the money raised will go towards NCH to support its services responding to the needs of local communities, including care for disabled children, fostering and adoption and support for vulnerable families and young carers.

The Swimathon Foundation, an independent charitable trust, will distribute the remaining 30 per cent to smaller, local charities which benefit the health and wellbeing of lacal residents.
