Superstore comes up trumps for crossing
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 18th May 2000.
Hanchett Grange residents and MP Richard Spring are celebrating after a successful end to a campaign for a crossing near Haverhill's Sainbury's stores.
Bryan Green, secretary of the Hanchett Village Residents' Association, said he was "absolutely over the moon" that Sainsbury's will pay the £20,000 needed to provide a zebra crossing with belisha beacons.
He said:" I have been trying for four years to get something done and have written 11 letters to Sainsbury's before I contacted Mr Spring.
"It really does need to be done, as especially on a Sunday morning when people go to cash their monthly pay cheques it is very busy up there. At the moment some people stop at the crossing, but others don't.
Mr Green met Mr Spring and officers of St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Sainsbury's branch manager Simon Green at the crossing just before the entrance to the store.
