Summer of fun

Thursday, 20th July 2000.

Haverhill's recreation ground will be 100 years old this month - and a big party is planned.
Haverhill Town Council is organising the event on Sunday, July 30, with local groups dressing in Victorian costume.
"The Rec" was given to the people of Haverhill in 1900 by Alderman William B Gurteen to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. His descendent Christopher Gurteen will bury a Millenium time capsule.
In 1900 a Prof Fleet parachuted on to the rec from a hot-air balloon.
The celebrations will include two free performances of an open-air production of Around the World in 80 Days by members of Snap Theatre Company.
Haverhill Silver Band, the first band to perform in the bandstand in 1900, will play at 2:30pm. From noon there will be a car boot sale, charity stalls, the Lions' beer tent, displays, sideshows, children's activities and local bands. Proceeds will go to local organisations and charities.
"We hope this event will be a worthy celebration of what is a wonderful open green space for events and activities," said co-ordinator Nick Keeble.
The event is part of Summer In Haverhill 2000. The box office is on (01440) 714140, information line 761196.
