Suffolk shop first to face alcohol ban after under-age selling

Thursday, 20th May 2010.

A shop in Suffolk has been served a notice which could see their licence to sell alcohol being revoked for 48 hours.

Trading standards officers served the notice yesterday morning and the license holder now has 14 days to decide whether to accept the proposed prohibition.

Marc Titford, principal trading standards officer, said; “The notice has been served on the premises following two test purchases in which people under the age of 18 were served alcohol.

"The license holder can either accept the penalty and comply with the 48 hour closure or, if they wish to appeal, they can take their case to court.

“This is the first time such a notice has been served on a licensed premise in the eastern region and shows just how seriously Suffolk Trading Standards takes cases of under-age sales and we will continue to work closely with the police, and other partners, to protect the vulnerable members of our community.”

Insp Becky Kidd-Stanton, Suffolk police's licensing inspector, said: "Persistently selling alcohol to under-age persons is not taken lightly by Suffolk Constabulary and we fully support the robust action being taken.

"We act on any information we receive about under-age selling and will carry out test purchasing operations with our partners to ensure young people are not able to access alcohol which can make them more vulnerable to becoming a victim of crime or committing a crime themselves.

"Today's closure notice should serve as a warning to other licensed premises that we will take away their ability to trade if they do not comply with the law."

Suffolk’s local authorities and police are committed to improving everyone’s quality of life.

Suffolk is a safe place to live and visit but agencies say they know that more can be done. Working together they hope to take pride in keeping Suffolk safe.
