Suffolk police supremo candidate visits Haverhill
Monday, 17th September 2012.
With the election of Suffolk's new policing supremo now only a couple of months away, the Labour party hosted their candidate in Haverhill on Saturday.
Jane Basham, the Labour Party candidate for the Suffolk Police & Crime Commissioner elections on November 15, joined the Haverhill and Kedington Labour Party branch at their stall on Haverhill market last Saturday.
Alongside the party's local county council candidates for May 2013, Jane met residents, shoppers and visitors to outline the contribution she will make to ensuring that Suffolk Police can meet the expectations of Suffolk residents and businesses.
With senior management experience with the police, she is well acquainted with police organisation and the constraints police work in delivering the low crime environment the county enjoys.
She has also had wider private sector management experience and a track record of working across communities through her work with the civil rights charity Ipswich & Suffolk Council for Race Equality, where she served as chief executive until April 2012.
Town and borough councillor Maureen Byrne said: "We are fortunate to have a high-calibre candidate, with extensive experience in public service - including direct senior experience with thepolice service.
"Jane brings an understanding of the challenges faced by our police officers and a welcome insight into the needs and concerns of all our residents and traders."
Haverhill town mayor Cllr Pat Hanlon, said: "The Labour Party in Suffolk has selected Jane as our candidate to protect our police service against the effects of huge budget cuts and the creeping privatisation of our police service, which we believe threaten front line police services across Suffolk.
"Vulnerable people in our community rely on effective public services for their wellbeing and comfort. Our police officers, and support staff, need our support to enable them to properly resource the services we have prioritised."
