Students take note of photos
Thursday, 14th March 2002.
Students from Samuel Ward Upper School and Technology College in Haverhill have been involved in The Aldeburgh Project, linking music and photography.
The large scale composition project for GCSE and A-level music students involved composers in residence Mike Challis and David Knotts.
Using photographs taken by juvenile offenders at the Hollesley Bay youth offenders centre as a starting point, students created a piece of music combining acoustic and electronic sound sources.
Their finished piece was performed on the last night of a Celebration of Schools Music Week at Snape Maltlngs.
A total of around 35 Samuel Ward students were involved in the project. Some of them were AS level photography students involved in taking photographs in response to the prison photographs and the music, bringing the project full circle. The photographs were displayed at Snape Maltings.
