Stowmarket joins in Haverhill's battle against illegal town centre parking
Monday, 28th October 2013.
Haverhill is not alone, it seems, in having a problem keeping illegal parking off its pedestrianised area.
Stowmarket police are reminding all drivers, which includes disabled blue badge holders, of parking regulations in the town centre before enforcement begins.
The enforcement follows after a recent increase in the number of drivers causing obstructions and complaints from members of the public, highlighting the need for education and following enforcement.
From Monday, November 4, police will be enforcing these regulations to all drivers, including blue badge holders.
Ipswich Street and Market Place are both part of a restricted zone which is no waiting 24-hours-a-day, except in dedicated bays for specified vehicles. This area is clearly marked with signs and a red brick road surface.
PC Andrew Martin from Stowmarket said: “The town centre is visited by a large number of vehicles every day and this is sure to increase as Stowmarket expands.
“Some blue badge owners assume as there are no road markings that it is completely legal to park along these two roads, but this is not the case. They must park in the designated disabled bays as shown on the road signs.
“Stowmarket offers ample disabled parking, put in place by Suffolk Highways to complement the restrictions and allow traffic to flow freely through the town.”
Philip Wright from Suffolk Highways said: “Within the town centre, that being Ipswich Street, Crowe Street, Church Walk and Bury St there are 14 marked disabled bays for use by blue badge holders, in marked out lay-by. This is without those that are within the towns car parks.”
Police will be issuing reminder leaflets, placing up posters and visiting the town centre regularly to highlight the regulations before enforcement begins.
The fact that it appears blue badge holders are allowed to park on double yellow lines in Haverhill seems not to have reached Stowmarket yet.
