Sport Relief Mile raised over £3,000

A fantastic £3,318 has been raised from the first ever Haverhill Sport Relief Mile in March in which more than 200 people took part.
The event, on March 25, was organised by Haverhill Running Club in partnership with Abbeycroft Leisure set off from Haverhill Leisure Centre to raise money for projects supported by Comic Relief.
The Sport Relief Mile is held every other year at locations across the UK and anyone of any age of ability can take part by walking, running or jogging, including those with physical and learning disabilities.
Participants ran, jogged and walked one, three or six miles in aid of Sport Relief. The money is used by Comic Relief to help transform the lives of poor and vulnerable people, both at home and across the world’s poorest countries.
Trevor Bunch, chairman of Haverhill Running Club, said: “We are overwhelmed by the amount raised by the event - it has exceeded all of our expectations and makes all of the effort worthwhile.
"The majority of the money was raised by the participants in the form of sponsorship, so I want to thank each and every person who took part.”
The event was a real community effort with members of Haverhill Running Club and Haverhill Ladies Hockey Club marshalling the event.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council allowed organisers to use the Railway Walk and Haverhill Town Council organised the PA system which enabled participants to have an aerobic warm-up session and music for the runners throughout the event.
Amelia Epton, Abbeycroft’s children and young people programme manager, said: “As with all first events you never know quite what to expect but we were thrilled with the turn out in March and we are even more delighted that such a fantastic community event has raised so much money for people in need.”
