Spiralling inflation swells school's harvest charity fund

Thursday, 26th October 2000.

PUPILS at Couples Primary School in Haverhill turned up with bags of coins last week and created money spirals for maths - and for a good cause.
The school's 227 pupils, aged from four to nine, got their families to turn out their loose change.
This produced an amazing 5,475 coins - all 1p, 2p and 5p pieces - which were put into spirals and measured.
The coins weighed 26kg (57lb) and came to £99.28, which will be used towards the sponsorship of a six-year-old boy in India by the school.
The harvest project at Couples this year is to provide £15 a month to sponsor Philimon Hembrom of Malda, Indo through the World Vision organisation.
The area where Philimon lives is famous for it's mangoes but many children there are malnourished because families cannot grow enough food for their needs. Health facilities are poor, most people cannot read or write and there are not enough schools.
Pupils earned more money for the project by doing jobs for their parents at home. Money was handed over at the school's harvest festival service last week.
