Speeding motorists to be targeted all next week
Saturday, 16th August 2014.
Motorists who risk lives by speeding are being targeted by Norfolk and Suffolk Police as part of a week-long enforcement campaign.
Officers will be speaking with drivers during the campaign, aiming to highlight dangers of speeding and the consequences that driving above the limit can have through education and enforcement.
The Europe-wide campaign, co-ordinated by TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network, begins on Monday and will run until Sunday (August 18-24), seeing an increased amount of checks and enforcement across both counties.
Motorists caught speeding will face a £100 fixed penalty notice and three points on their licence, or may have the option to complete a speed awareness course.
Under certain circumstances drivers could be taken to court where they may face larger fines and disqualification from driving.
Ch Insp Chris Spinks, head of the Norfolk and Suffolk Roads Policing Unit, said: "Drivers who speed are more likely to be involved in a collision because they have less time to react to situations.
"Speeding is recognised as one of the ‘fatal four’ offences which leads to people being killed or seriously injured on our roads alongside drink driving, using a mobile phone and seatbelt offences.
"The limits are in place for a reason, to reduce casualties and keep the roads safe for everyone. During this campaign we’ll be speaking to drivers using a mixture of education and enforcement to get the message through to slow down.”
