Speed traps may be round the corner
Thursday, 5th August 2010.
Motorists across Suffolk are being warned to watch their speed as Suffolk police target one of the main causes of road traffic collisions.
Roads policing officers will be focusing their efforts on one specific aspect of road safety each month, with a reduction in excess speed the objective for August.
During 2009 speeding was identified as a contributing factor in 21 of the 42 fatal casualties on Suffolk’s roads.
Officers will be teaming up with Safer Neighbourhood Teams as community speedwatch programmes form part of the month-long dedicated crackdown.
Roads Policing Inspector Zoe Finn wants to educate motorists about the dangers of speeding and the consequences that driving above the limit can have.
“We’re letting people know about our operations beforehand because we want them to have it in the back of their minds that we could be round the corner,” said Insp Finn.
“This isn’t a money-making exercise, it’s a casualty reduction and education operation. We are currently four per cent over our projected end-of-year target for our killed and seriously injured (KSI) statistics and the purpose of this initiative is to make drivers aware of their speed and drive to the conditions. As a result of this we will hopefully see a reduction in our KSIs".
During August the European trafic police network TISPOL will be conducting a week of enforcement targeting speeding vehicles, which Suffolk will be supporting through this initiative.
