Speed check week aims to reduce fatalities

Friday, 15th April 2011.

Motorists are being warned by Suffolk police to reduce their speed on the county's roads or risk being caught as an enforcement campaign begins next week.

The campaign, led by TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network, will run between Monday and Sunday, April 18-24, and will see increased checks and enforcement across Suffolk.

Speeding is one of the main causation factors of fatal and serious injury collisions. In 2010 20 people died on Suffolk’s roads and in almost a third of these incidents speeding was identified as being a contributory factor.

Motorists caught speeding will face a £60 fixed penalty notice and three points on their licence. Certain offences could see drivers taken to court where they may face larger fines and disqualification from driving.

During the campaign police officers will be aiming to highlight the issue of speeding through education and enforcement, meaning motorists are more likely than ever to be caught when driving at excessive speeds.

Ch Insp Adrian Dawson, head of roads policing for Suffolk said: “Tackling speeding is a priority throughout the year because excessive speed is so dangerous and is a contributing factor in a large amount of road traffic collisions.

"We want drivers to take note of the very simple message of ‘slow down – speed kills’. By sticking to the legal speed limits unnecessary injuries and deaths can be prevented.

“It’s a minority of drivers who feel they are above the law that place the majority of the public at risk – and it’s these motorists we will be targeting throughout this campaign and beyond.

"People can expect an increased police presence during this campaign, so if you are speeding we will catch you and you will be dealt with accordingly. ”
