Special memorials at cemetery for babies and children
Wednesday, 24th August 2011.
Special memorials where families can remember babies and children buried in Haverhill Cemetery will be unveiled next month.
The memorials are in a part of the cemetery dedicated to stillborn babies and children, but it is hoped they will also become a place where any parents who have lost a child can come and remember them.
The memorials will be unveiled on Sunday, September 25, following a commemoration service at the cemetery chapel.
It is not known how many babies and children are buried in Haverhill Cemetery as many of the older records held by the former Haverhill Urban District Council were not kept. The cemetery is now managed by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
For many years young children were usually buried in unmarked graves or at the foot of an adult grave, which means that later generations find it difficult to trace them.
Attitudes to helping people cope with bereavement have changed in recent times and it is hoped the new memorials will give parents a sensitive way to acknowledge their loss.
Anyone who has lost a child is welcome to attend the service of commemoration at the cemetery chapel and the unveiling of the memorials, but they are asked to first contact the cemeteries office on 01284 757068 to register their interest.
