Special events commemorate 90th anniversary of town war memorial
Wednesday, 27th October 2010.
A very special commemoration of Remembrance takes place in Haverhill over the next few days, beginning with a film show tonight, and moving on to a two-day festival followed by an evening tribute in words and music on Saturday.
The events are particularly geared to remembering those who died in the First World War and mark the 90th anniversary of the unveiling of Haverhill's War Memorial.
The first event is tonight at 7.30pm, a showing of East Anglian World War One films, organised by the Haverhill and District Local History Group.
The Remembrance Festival takes place on Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 4pm when Haverhill Arts Centre will host a variety of displays and short performances from local groups and schools such as Haverhill Art Group, flower displays from the Haverhill and District Flower Club and St Mary’s Church and Haverhill Girl Guides and Brownies.
Kedington Garden Society will present Dig for Victory and the Gurteen’s Factory will display memorabilia from their days of supplying soldiers’ uniforms.
Haverhill Family History Group has researched the lives and deaths of all 144 people whose names are on the town's war memorial from World War One, to create a book of remembrance.
Every half hour throughout the two days of the festival, a bell will be rung from the Arts Centre stage and six of the names read out, followed by a short tribute in words or in music from a variety of performers drawn from the various town organisations.
To round off the commemorations there will be an evening tribute in words and music from Haverhill Choral Society, St Mary’s Church Choir and local actors, entitled In Flanders’ Fields.
Admission to the daytime festival is free, and tickets to the evening event, which begins at 8pm, are £3. All proceeds will be donated to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. For more information call Haverhill Arts Centre on 01440 714140.
