Soldier Honoured For Role In Iraq War
Thursday, 22nd September 2005.
Iraq war veteran Mandy Denton has been awarded a medal for her efforts.
The staff sergeant, from Cramswell Close in Haverhill, worked as the chief clerk to the military secretary and general's PA during the inital advances of the war in 2003.
Based at Basra Airport with HQ1 (UK) Armoured Division, Staff Sgt Denton described the fear of chemical attack as Allied forces fought to wrestle power from Saddam Hussein.
She said, "It was absolutely petrifying. It was still at the time when we thought he had weapons of mass destruction and alarms were going off around the trenches."
The 34 year old received the medal emblazoned with the image of an ancient sculpture and the Queens head on the other side at a special ceremony in Cambridge's army recruiting office last week.
She is married to Michael, 40, who is a captain in the Army. The couple have a 16 month old daughter, Millie.
Staff Sgt Denton said: "I am very glad I went out there and experienced what i did".
