Site wins go ahead
Thursday, 17th February 2000.
A HUGE multi-million pound industrial and warehouse site has won outline planning permission and work could start by the end of the year.
Wrenbridge Limited and 3i Commercial Property submitted plans for the 37-acre site, next to the Haverhill bypass, which include a petrol station, roadside restaurant and hotel.
Part of the site is across the Essex border and a spokesman for Braintree District Council said its planning committee hoped to consider the plan at its meeting at the end of March.
Paul Bird, of Wrenbridge, said the site presented a very exciting opportunity for Haverhill and should create hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs, depending on what it was used for.
The company would now be starting to market it seriously to existing local companies and others from outside.
He said quite a lot of interest had already been shown in the site, but some people had gone elsewhere because of the delay in gaining planning consent.
"If Haverhill is ever going to do it, now is the time. The property market is fairly buoyant and there is an overflow from Cambridge. Haverhill is not far away, the road link is quite good and land is much cheaper. The site is able to take on very large requirements for warehousing or manufacturing facilities," Mr Bird said.
As conditions of the planning consent developers have had to agree to:
** Provide car parking
** Make contributions to a town centre study and town centre improvements
** Provide an off-site cycleway
** Create the A1017 traffic-calming scheme for Sturmer
** Provide public transport and green travel plans
** Meet conditions relating to landscaping, noise levels and the protection of trees and wildlife.
