Sign is suitable and should stay - landlord
Thursday, 19th April 2001.
A PUB landlord says a roadside sign with a spelling mistake should stay for entertainment value.
The sign, which was put in place by Suffolk County Council, should say "this road is unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles". Instead it says "unsitable". The mistake has caused pub customers to chuckle into their beer since it was erected.
Maurice Peters, landlord of The Lion pub in Stoke-by-Clare, said he could not believe his eyes when the sign first appeared.
He said: "Who needs entertainment when you've got the council and all their barmy signs to keep you amused?
"It's been keeping my customers amused so I am happy for it to stay."
James Powell, press officer for Suffolk County Council, said the council was aware the sign contained a mistake and was looking into whether its design brief had contained the error.
He said: "We feel that the meaning of the sign is clear and therefore we do not have any plans to change it immediately."
