Shoppers warned to keep bags and purses secure

Thursday, 22nd April 2010.

After two more thefts from women's purses on Monday have come to light, police have issued a warning about keeping bags secure when out shopping.

Yesterday we reported how a woman had given a small amount of cash to a man who asked for some in Crown Passage in Haverhill, and later found a lot more had ben taken from her purse.

The same had happened earlier that morning in Hadleigh, and now two incidents in between have been reported, one in Clare and one in Cavendish.

A police sposman said: "Shoppers are reminded to keep purses and bags secure and on their person at all times, and only to assist someone who asks for help if you are happy to do so. Any suspicious persons should be reported to police."

All four crimes are being linked. In Clare Co-op, at around 11am a man asked a woman for change. She gave him a small amount and he walked off with an item from the shelves. She later found cash was missing from her purse.

The man is described as in his 30s, of large build, 5ft 9in tall with dark brown short receding hair and was wearing dark clothing. He spoke in broken English.

Calls in relation to this incident should be made to PC Ruth Horton at the St Edmundsbury Rural South Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

In Cavendish high street at around 10.30am the same thing happened. This man is described as of Asian appearance, of large build with collar length black hair and was wearing a dark coloured jacket and he spoke with a foreign accent.

Calls in relation to this incident should be made to Sgt Kevin Horton at the St Edmundsbury Rural South Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
