Sex attack to feature on Crimewatch

By Martin Chapman on Wednesday, 19th June 2002.

The attempted rape of a middle aged woman at Haverhill’s Burton End Primary school last month is to feature on the BBC’s Crimewatch programme next week.

The fifty-two year woman was attacked on May 17.

She was grabbed from behind and dragged to the ground as she went to close a window at the school shortly after six o’clock. The man then threatened her with a knife while trying to pull her trousers down.

Bravely the woman thought the attacker off by scratching and biting him. Speaking shortly after the incident Det Chief Insp. Beach emphasised that if it wasn’t for the woman’s courage: “the consequences would have been far worse.”

Now Suffolk Police have renewed their appeal for information, and the BBC have decided to feature the case on the Crimewatch programme next week.

Suffolk Police particularly want to hear from the driver of a large burnt orange coloured transit-style van, which was seen in the area after the attack.

Police have emphasised that they are not connecting the occupant or occupants of the vehicle with the attack but believe they may have seen a man fitting the description of the attacker fleeing the scene at speed.

Det Chief Insp.Tim Beach said: “A man fitting the description of the would-be rapist was seen running at speed from the area and it is possible that the occupant of the vehicle would have seen this suspect.

“We are not connecting the occupants with the incident but believe they may have valuable information,” he added.

The van had a high top and a bank of orange lights on the roof and was parked on a grass verge at the Burton End junction facing towards the town centre.

The attacker who is pictured in the efit is believed to have sustained bite or scratch marks is described as white in his 30s. He is 5 ft 10 in tall with short dark spiky hair. He was unshaven and wearing an off-white or dirty top with grey jogging bottoms.

Anyone with information is urged to call Suffolk Police on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
