Seven marathons in seven days over Christmas

Monday, 8th December 2014.

Haverhill Leisure Centre personal trainer and former ISKA British Thai Boxing Champion Matt Fitch will take on one of his biggest challenges yet when he attempts to runs seven marathons in seven days to raise £1,000 for charity.

Matt, 29, who lives in Haverhill, will run a total of 184 miles in seven days over the Christmas period from December 21 to 28 in aid of Clare Seekers, a social club for the visually impaired.

The challenge will echo that of Matt’s hero Sir Ranulph Fiennes who completed seven marathons in seven days on seven continents in 2003, although Matt will be doing his seven marathons closer to home in Haverhill.

Matt’s challenge came about after he took a friend who is almost blind out for the day and realised just how hard it is for him but also for his wife.

He said: “It really brought home how hard it is to be without sight and how difficult it is to look after someone with a disability.

"It’s the little things that you really don’t realise. Like stopping before you go from a dark room into the light because people who have visual disabilities need time to adjust.”

Matt, who teaches circuits on Mondays and boxing on Tuesdays at the centre as well as a number of other private classes, is training both in and out of the gym at the Leisure Centre. He hopes to complete each marathon over the seven days in under four hours.

He added: “I like to challenge myself and my hero Sir Ranulph Fiennes did it but across seven continents just months after he had a heart attack. It’s a great cause and I hope to raise lots of money.”

Centre manager James Purkiss said: “Matt loves to set himself small challenges! He is an inspiration to others and we admire his passion for fitness and for raising money for charity.”
