Seven days left to register to vote on May 5
Thursday, 7th April 2011.
With borough and parish elections and a UK-wide referendum taking place on Thursday, May 5, St Edmundsbury Borough Council is urging voters to make sure they are registered to vote in time.
“The deadline to register is Thursday, April 14, so if you’re not already registered, don’t delay,” says Geoff Rivers, returning officer for St Edmundsbury.
It only takes a few minutes: call 01284 757131 or print off the form from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk. Postal votes will be sent out on Monday, April 18.
Details of who has been nominated in your parish and in all borough wards can be found at www.stedmunsbury.co.uk/elections. Click on elections, then current elections.
“The Electoral Commission, the independent elections watchdog, is sending a booklet to every household in the UK with information about how to have your say on May 5," says Phillippa Saray, Electoral Commission spokesperson. "Don’t let the deadline and the chance to have your say pass you by!”
The referendum is on the voting system used for elections to the UK Parliament. The question being put to voters is: “At present, the UK uses the ’first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the ‘alternative vote’ system be used instead?”
Don't forget that, even if your parish or ward is uncontested, there will still be a polling station open there so that you can vote in the Referendum.
