Service recognised at meeting
Thursday, 6th May 1999.
SEVERAL members of Haverhill Town Council were thanked for their work at the annual town meeting, the last before stepping down from office.
Coun Ron Hartley, who has been awarded the Freedom of the Borough of St Edmundsbury for his services as a councillor for 38 years, was one of those no longer continuing.
Town Mayor Maggie Lee paid tribute to Coun Hartley, along with councillors Eileen Elkins, George Hatchell, Tim Pavelin and Cohn Jones.
No town council election is being held this year, with only 16 candidates standing for the 16 seats.
The new town council, which formally takes office on May 11, will have to elect a town mayor, and Coun Lee, who has held the office for the past two years, did not know if she would be asked to continue.
"I have really loved it, but it will be for the new council to decide. I think it is a real shame there is no town council election, it is not good for local democracy," Coun Lee said.
"It was quite emotional at the annual meeting to lose these councillors. We thank them for their dedication, they have given up a large chunk of their lives, without any payment. We are certainly going to miss them."
During the annual meeting Coun Lee outlined the council’s achievements, especially in the leisure field. She said more than 20,000 people had taken part in leisure events with more than £40,000 spent, and they felt they were now reaching most of the population through leisure.
The candidates elected unopposed are:
Chalkstone ward - Angela Millar, Kevin Griffin, Patrick Hanlon and Charles Clowes
Cangle - Mary Dunning, Maureen Holmes, Phillip French and Gerry Kiernan
Castle - Alexandra Trewartha and Larry Kiernan
Clements - Alan Smith, Eric Bowman, Maggie Lee and Margaret Woodley
St Marys and Helions - Mary Martin and Leonard Hancock.
