Season draws to a close for senior golfers

Harvey Bavester scored a nett 63 for a commanding victory in the IFF Challenge which was played at Haverhill Golf Club on Wednesday, October 27.

The full results were: Division One, 1 Harvey Bavester 72-9-63; 2 Michael Warren 74-7-67; 3 Robert Rudge 80-10-70.

Division Two, 1 Trevor Broomfield 85-16-69; 2 Stuart Haworth 92-20-72; 3 Ivan Drury 88-16-72.

Division Three, 1 Neil White 88-21-67; 2 Terry Pinckney 89-22-67; 3 Ken Johnson 95-23-72.

It was also a celebration for Paul Loomes, who scored an ace on the par hree, 129-yard eighth hole, using a pitching wedge.

The 2010 season has now drawn to a close for the Haverhill seniors, with mixed results for their last matches as follows - on October 15 they won 6-2 at home against Stoke by Nayland, on October 1 they won 6½-1½ at home against Hintlesham.

After a very closely fought match they lost away against Fynn Valley on October 22 3½-4½, and on October 25 they lost away against Bourn 1-7.

The seniors mixed match away to Braintree on October 2 resulted in another loss 6-2 and finally on October 29, The Essex fielded a very strong team to beat Haverhill at home 6½-1½. During the season the seniors won 20 home matches, lost four and drew two. For away matches they won six and lost 21.

The ladies versus juniors fixture was played on Thursday, October 28. It was a very closely fought contest, played in a good sporting spirit, resulting in the match being halved.

The medal and J Houchen Cup was played on Sunday October 31, and once again some great scores were posted. Winning overall and claiming the J Houchen Cup with an impressive nett 63 was Andrew Tabrar, who has now had his handicap reduced by two shots to 12.

The full results were: Division One, 1 Garry Baird 75-11-64; 2 Ed Baker 78-10-68; 3 Charlie Sigler 79-11-68.

Division Two, 1 Andrew Tabrar 77-14-63; 2 John Stokes 83-15-68; 3 Colin Bradnam 82-13-69.

Division Three, 1 Mark Wray 92-24-70; 2 Andrew Wilson 96-24-72; 3 Geoff Gallaway 98-26-72.

The Stowmarket meeting of the Suffolk Winter Alliance was held on Sunday, October 31. The Haverhill pairing of Wayne Penman and Paul Donno finished in second place with 44pts, losing out by just one point to Howard Foster and Roger Gardiner from Stoke by Nayland. Kevin Earp of Bury Driving Range won the Professional Prize with a score of 69.
