Scores add up to national achievement
Tuesday, 30th March 2010.
Maths students at Samuel Ward College of Arts and Technology in Haverhill have shown their abilities in a national challenge, one of them being in the top five per cent countrywide.
The UK intermediate maths challenge was held recently and 50 of the best mathematicians in Samuel Ward's years ten and 11 were invited to take part.
Of these 50 students 20 were awarded certificates for their score.
Fifteen of them achieved the bronze award (nine year tens and six year 11s), three were awarded silver (one year ten and two year 11s) and two students (both year 11) were awarded gold.
Of the two who achieved gold, one, Faye Battye, achieved such a high score that she was invited to compete in the next round, the pink kangaroo.
This is a challenge that is by invite only. In order to be invited to compete in the pink kangaroo your score had to be in the top five per cent of all scores in the UK.
