School is cool
Thursday, 4th August 2005.
Children from a Haverhill primary school are among the winners in a county wide competition.
The competition organised by Suffolk County Council and sponsored by Yorkshire Building Society.
The students were asked to either design a poster or write a piece persuading other young people why they should go to school regularly.
The “School is Cool” competition received over 100 entries from across the county, from which the panel of judges selected 12 winners.
All the winners were from St Felix Primary school in town and were entered in the seven to eleven years category. Katie Goodall was the winner of the poster competition. Sam Horscroft, and Evie Marlow were first and second runner up, respectively, in the persuasive writing category.
Councillor Patricia O'Brien, portfolio holder for children, schools and young people's services said; " I am delighted that we had such a great response to this competition. I was very impressed by the eye-catching posters, and very persuasive writing - and I now have some very good ideas about why young people enjoy going to school here in Suffolk. I hope this competition has highlighted how important it is to attend school - we will be using the young people's ideas in our school attendance campaigns to spread the message across the county."
The prizes were awarded by Councillor Patricia O'Brien and Stephen Lye, manager of the Ipswich branch of Yorkshire Building Society. Winners of the competition were awarded with a £50 book voucher, the first runners up were awarded with a £25 book voucher, and the second runners up were awarded with a £10 book voucher.
