Schedule to help us recycle at Christmas
Thursday, 15th December 2011.
The council has issued its bin collection schedule for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Between Monday, December 26, and Friday, January 6, all household waste bins in St Edmundsbury will be collected one working day later.
A leaflet is being delivered to all households giving the collection calendar for the two-week holiday period, and reminding householders of what waste belongs in each bin. Details are also available on the St Edmundsbury Borough Council website www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk
Cllr Peter Stevens, the council's cabinet member for environment said: “St Edmundsbury residents are among the top recyclers in the country and I am sure that they will take the festive recycling challenge in their stride.
"The country throws away 250 tonnes of real Christmas trees, 500 tonnes of lights, 4,500 tonnes of foil and 13,350 tonnes of glass over the festive period and almost all of it can be recycled.
"We are circulating top tips with the collection calendar, and any doubtful material can be checked out on the council website or the waste hotline 01284 757320.”
Real Christmas trees can be cut up and placed in the brown bin, along with real holly, mistletoe and other festive foliage.
Cool ash from real log fires and wood burners can also be put in the brown bin, along with shredded paper, plain cardboard and uncooked kitchen vegetable and salad waste.
This waste is composted and turned into soil improver, which is then used in horticultural and agriculture.
Christmas trees that are too large to fit into your brown bin, once cut up, can be taken to Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Non-metallic wrapping paper can go in the blue bin, along with clean foil.
Anything with a plug on it, or which needs batteries, or charging, can be taken to household waste recycling centres.
