Save lives, make a plan

By Martin Chapman on Friday, 25th June 2004.

Suffolk Fire Service, is once again urging people to make an escape plan in case of fires in the home.

“How will you all get out alive?” the new national campaign being backed by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service aims to save lives, by raising awareness of the importance of an escape plan.

The service attends around 40 fires a month in homes which results in injury, or even death. However a fire action plan could have avoided these.

A fire action plan prepares for a fire in the home ensuring everyone knows how to act quickly, safely and as fast as possible in the case of a fire.

Peter Monk, of Suffolk County Council said: “Many of us know what to do if a fire starts at work, but could you say that about your own home? “How will you all get out alive?” encourages people to make a fire action plan so they know what to do in the event of fire.”

“Last year, four people were killed and a further sixty were injured in domestic fires in Suffolk. Thinking about how you would escape from your home can increase your chances of surviving a house fire. By making a plan and installing a working smoke alarm you can save yourself valuable time to escape before it is too late.”
