Safety warnings as clocks go back

Friday, 23rd October 2009.

Clocks go back one hour tomorrow night (Saturday) and both police and fire services have issued warnings to people about safety on darker evenings.

Police are encouraging homeowners to keep their property safe from thieves by kee3ping windows and doors locked and securing garages and sheds with outdoor battery alarms.

Several garages in Haverhill have been targeted by burglars over the past few weeks.

Police also suggest fixing mesh or bars to garage windows to deter burglars.

They warn people never to leave a spare key outside the property as a burglar will know where to look.

Equipment like barbecues and lawnmowers should be moved into secure sheds or garages and valuables should be security coded.

Suffolk Fire Service recommend people to check their smoke alarms when they put their clocks back.

Assistant chief fire officer Gary Phillips said: “It’s important that people check their smoke alarms regularly and there’s no better time to do it than now. Smoke alarms act as an early warning sign and, in recent months in Suffolk, many alarms have helped to save lives.”
