Safety scheme under spotlight
Thursday, 13th September 2001.
A MAJOR scheme to get pupils safely to School Lane in Hayerhill, which has suffered congestion problems for many years, was due to be considered by councillors today.
The £110,000 scheme has been developed as part of a Safely to School project with Burton End Primary School, but is also aimed to help Castle Hill Middle and St Felix Primary Schools, which are both off School Lane.
It aims to reduce congestion in School Lane and encourage pupils to walk and cycle to the schools. Congestion in the area at the start and end of the school day has been a long-standing problem and petitions have been gathered by parents who have feared for their children’s safety.
The plan includes two humped zebra crossings in School Lane to help pedestrians reach the schools from the residential areas to the east.
Extended school markings at the front of Burton End school are aimed to deter parking and reduce speed. “School Zone” signs designed by pupils at Burton End could also be put up at the end of School Lane.
The car park area at the north end of School Lane would be resurfaced and marked spaces would be provided to ensure it was better used. A footway would also be provided on the verge on the east side of the road.
The existing path to the Chimswell area would be widened for combined cyclist and pedestrian use and lighting could be improved.
A part-time 20mph speed limit in Burton End is being investigated and also a possible footway/cyclepath across land at the back of the schools linking to the Strawberry Fields estate.
Members of St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Transport and Works Committee were being asked to approve the scheme at their meeting today
