Ruth is 103 Years Young
Thursday, 25th September 2003.
Ruth Atherton, the oldest resident at Eastcotts nursing home on Calford Green, is due to celebrate her 103rd birthday today.
Sprightly Mrs Atherton lived independently at home in Thurlow before she moved to Eastcotts two and a half years ago after breaking her hip.
She was the youngest child in a large family and attended West Wickham School. She later worked in domestic service, working in London and locally at Streetly Hall in West Wickham.
Mrs Atherton had two daughters, Daphne, who died at the age of 11, and Rene Davey, who visits her three or four times a week. She also has a grandson, Paul.
Mrs Davey said: "She is quite alert, happy and content."
Eastcotts staff are to hold a special birthday party for Ruth and several other residents who are celebrating their birthdays.
