Runaway Lyn finishes eight shots clear

It was a runaway victory for Lyn Fish on Saturday, May 7, in the Ladies Medal at Haverhill Golf Club, where she finished an incredible eight shots clear of her nearest rival.
Lyn has now had her handicap cut by three shots to 22. The full results were: 1 Lyn Fish 89-25-64; 2 Geraldine Wheatley 95-23-72; 3 Pat Kennedy 92-17-75.
The Haverhill Ladies played in their county Weston match at The Suffolk on Tuesday, May 10. Sadly one of the members of The Suffolk team was unable to play due to injury and therefore one of the matches had to be conceded.
In the event, a team of four played and the final result was a commanding win for Haverhill 4-1.
The results were (Haverhill players first): Sue Carr lost 1 down to Angie Lewis, Karen Wilby won 7&5 against Kerry Lee, Denise Walker won 5&4 against Mairi Bowie and finally Pat Kennedy had a tough battle against her opponent, and eventually won on the 23rd hole against Joan Plumb.
The return match is at Haverhill on June 10. Haverhill will also be meeting The Suffolk in another county fixture, the Stearn, during the same week, on June 6.
The Ladies match against Girton was played on Thursday, May 12. The overall result was a win for Haverhill, 2½-1½.
The match results were (Haverhill team first): lady captain Marian Mercer & Sheila Playle won 1up against Joan Grayer & Linda Powley, Doreen Darbey & Rosemary Debnam won 3&2 against Veronica McGrath & Shirley Coote, Sally Price & Val Shipp halved against Jacqui Storey & Gloria Bean, Pam Ratford & Jo Stokes lost 5&4 against Jean Bowyer & Claire Torner.
On Saturday, May 14, the next ‘major’ of the 2011 season, the HMP Foursomes Cup, was contested. The majority of the field struggled in very windy conditions, but winning with 40pts were the partnership of Kim Ward and Jim Walker. In second place were Del Thomas and Gordon Price with 38pts and in third place Julian North and Mel Stuart with 36pts.
Later that afternoon the Haverhill Ladies played their match at home against Bury St Edmunds, which resulted in a 3-1 win for the hosts.
The match results were: (Haverhill team first) Pat Kennedy & Jane Herrington halved against Mariette Robbetse & Denise Sillett, Karen Wilby & Carol Day won 4&3 against Ann Turner & Barbara Simm, Pauline Calmet & Gerry Wheatley halved against Hilary Fitch & Linda McFegan and Lyn Fish & Sheila Price won 4&2 against Lynn Wright & Sadie Tricker.
The Linton Enterprise Classic was played on Sunday, May 15, as a pairs four ball better ball stableford. Although the field was down on last year, the funds raised through the sponsorship and raffle were a lot higher than expected.
Terry Bishop, the event organiser, thanked all those for taking part, especially the sponsors whose loyalty and generosity over the years was greatly appreciated.
Terry also thanked the volunteers, his wife Wendy and daughter Hayley, who assisted with running the event on the day. The total raised from the Linton Enterprise over the past 11 years has reached in excess £13,000.
The funds are being re-invested in projects to improve the facilities at the golf club. On the day, the weather just about held up and there were some good scores returned.
Winning nearest the pin for the ladies on the eighth was Lyn Fish, and for the men on the 12th, Paul Donno.
The score for the best back nine with 21pts went to Tom McKenzie and Richard Norden. The best front nine went to Haverhill juniors Liam Merritt and Mitchell Davis with 25pts.
The overall winners on countback were Mike Bennett and Graham Hepworth with 43pts. In second place were Dennis Harkness and Ivan Drury with 43pts, in third place were Gavin Hatton and Andy Cage with 42pts and in fourth place Haverhill juniors Lewis Whiting and James Higham with 41pts.
