Rovers succesful away trip
Monday, 19th November 2001.
HAVERHILL Rovers came out on top, against the the team that were top. The Haverhill side took three well deserved points after the long trip across Suffolk to Leiston on Saturday.
The first chance of the game fell to Rovers 51 seconds in, a short corner and a one two between Milesy and Neil Hammond resulting in Coggs’ header going just wide of the top corner.
Brandty’s turn and volley from 20 yards went just a foot over the Leiston bar thirteen minutes later and Ben’s turn and shot from 20 yards went just wide of the mark in the 18th minute.
Rovers took the lead in the 28th minute, a corner from the captain back flicked towards goal by Jenkin, with no defender or goalkeeper positioned on the near post to prevent the ball from going in.
Brandty fired over from twenty yards when under pressure two minutes later and some desperate defending in the six yard box prevented a Leiston equaliser on 38 minutes.
In first half injury time Justin Cheney headed straight at Dave Walton from Rob Kirkley’s cross to end the half.
In the second half it was seventeen minutes before the first opportunity came, Craig Taylor firing well over for Leiston from thirty yards out.
Leiston could consider themselves unlucky not to equalise in the 64th minute, a volley from Cheney hitting the far post and, with Dave scrambling to get back into position, Gavin Jenning miss hit the rebound while unmarked and the ball crawled just wide of the same post to leave Rovers a goal to the good.
Adie’s sliding 20 yard shot curled the wrong side of the post eight minutes later before Rovers doubled their lead, Coggs feeding the ball to Sharpie, whose low cross found the former, his turn and shot crawling over the line with the Leiston goalkeeper wrong footed and unable to make the save.
Cheney then left the field, the recipient of a red card following his second bookable offence in the 7th minute; Sharpie then shot over from the edge of the area two minutes later. The third came ten minutes from the end, a corner from Coggs headed in by Brandty, the defender unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
An excellent win for Rovers; fully deserved although some people may have found the score slightly flattering.
