Rovers lose opener as two sent off
Thursday, 26th August 1999.
A Goal a minute from half time earned Chatteris a win over Haverhill Rovers as the Jewson League, first division season began.
In a physical game, Haverhill were reduced to nine men when Mark Brandt was sent off for fighting and Trevor David was ordered off after a second bookable offence.
"It wasn't much of a game," said Haverhill manager Danny Boyle. "I thought we were good for a draw, but the difference was they hit the net and we didn't.
"I couldn't complain about the sendings-off. But there is no consistency. Their players were getting away with offences just as bad."
Chatteris manager Mel Matless was a lot happier with his side's performance.
"It was a physical game, but in the first half particularly, we played some good stuff," he said. "It's a totally new side and we needed to get off to a good start, which we managed to do. Ashley Spendelow hit the bar twice and had one cleared off the line, so we could have scored more."
