Rovers hit top form - at long last

Thursday, 12th October 2000.

PAUL Goodman's Haverhill Rovers shock off their early season blues in emphatic style as they hammered March Town 5-0 to record their first league points of the campaign in Jewson League Division One.
Adrian Hunt set them on their way with a 30-yard shot which crashed in off the crossbar, and further strikes from Alex Clarke, Paul Miles, Mark Brent and Paul Jenkins (a penalty) sealed the win.
"We didn't stop," Goodman. "We were at them all the time and you could see that we wanted more goals. It was as if we were trying to make up for last week's performance."
The manager, who praised groundstaff for the "absolutely superb" pitch, added: "It was nice to get out first win, but it had been coming for some time really."
"They worked so hard in training and they thoroughly deserved it. We created a lot of chances and probably didn't convert as many as we should have, but the ones we did were quality."
Shell-shocked March boss Gavin Stevenson paid tribute to Rovers - "on the day they were a lot better than us and I thought they played very well," he said - but hit out at his players.
"We need new personnel urgently because that was not acceptable. Changes will be made," he said.
To compound his misery, defender Jordan Hayes was sent off near the end for disputing the penalty.
"To quote Tommy Docherty 'The way we played we were lucky to get nought'," said Stevenson.
