Rovers go up a gear

Thursday, 25th April 2002.

Haverhill Rovers won 3-0 at King’s Lynn reserves on Saturday in Jewson League, Division One.

Paul Jenkin, Neil Cogger and Mark Brandt netted for the Hamlet Croft outfit.

Rovers’ boss Paul Goodman said: “It was quite lethargic in the first half, but in the second half we stepped it up a gear and played very well.”

Striker Jenkin hit an upright with a first-half shot, but he was not to be denied for very long.

Midway through the opening period, the visitors strung together a rood move and Jenkin added the finishing touch.

Neil Cogger released Jenkin, who fired the ball under the home goalkeeper. “The front two’s movement was excellent all game,” said Goodman.

Marcus Hunt moved from midfield into defence after half time and Rovers looked more solid for the change.

Goodman said: “We just got them a little bit more organised. Paul Miles was running the game really from the midfield, so we weren’t in any real problems.”

Hunt was outstanding, especially welcome for Goodman as defender Neil Hammond (ill was ruled out.

Neil Hammond was in the running for a place in the side until the 11th hour.

“He was with us and he would have played but he was not quite right in the warm-up, so we decided the best thing to do was to rest him.”

Cogger’s second-half strike gave the visitors some breathing space.

He picked up possession on the halfway line and advanced on goal without being challenged, finding the net from long range.

“It went flying in.” said the manager. I don’t think their keeper saw it.”

Brandt volleyed in the clincher at the back post, capping a slick eight. Pass-move.

“It was well received all around the ground,” said the boss who described it as “real pass-and-move training ground stuff”.

Haverhill continued their great run with a 6-0 win over Cambridge City reserves on Tuesday night. Mark Brandt grabbed a hat-trick, Paul Jenkin got two and Neil Green completed the scoring.

Rovers finish their campaign at Downham on Saturday.
