Rovers boss fumes again
Thursday, 27th April 2000.
Haverhill boss Lee Barrett will expect a vast improvement on Saturday when his team travel to Swaffham in the Jewson League, first division
He was left seething after Easter weekend defeats against Dereham on Saturday and then Cornard two days later.
And he warned he will not accept such sub-standard performances next season.
"I'm pleased it is the end of the season, because if we had played like this all year we would have finished bottom of the table," he said.
"Some of the players need to take a good look at themselves and decide whether they want to play at this level or whether they are content to play park football".
"I thought Saturday's performance was terrible, yet we managed to play even worse on Monday. I find it hard to believe just how bad we were".
Barrett has selection difficulties ahead of the trip to midtable Swaffham. Phil Hammond, Mark Brandt and Darrin Brindley are all doubtful with knocks while James Dukes and Simon Young are both unavailable.
"We are really strected to the limit at the moment," said Barrett, "We really are struggling to get two sides out on Saturday."
Rovers defeated Swaffham 1-0 at home earlier in the season, and the Rovers boss expects a difficult game.
"I missed the game, but from what I have been told they are not a bod side. We need to go into the game with a positive attitude".
And that means a different approach from the weekend.
After the home defeat by Dereham Barrett fumed: "We just didn't perform yet again and it's this end of season nothing-to-play-for form, because we were rubbish!
"I can't put my finger on where the problem lies, but we've got to be consistent if we want to win things.
"Some of the players are not up to it at the moment, and some of them will have to look at themselves and see what they want to do next season, because I'm not very happy at all".
At least they scored in that game, Ben Cowley getting the consolation goal in the second half when Rovers were already 2-0 down.
It was even more abject on Monday at Conard, with Barrett calling the performance "a shambles".
He said: "We were an absolute load of rubbish and we were lucky to get nil. I wish 1 had 11 substitutes because they would have all come on !
"it was another end-of-season game where no-one tried. We started badly, then fell away, but I won't put up with this next season. Attitudes have got to, and will, change.
"I can't understand why we are so poor at the moment, because we can be a good side. It's just a case of if one player has a bad game then everyone does.
"I'd love to be able to strengthen the squad next season, but with no money, I've got my hands tied
"We're all doom and gloom at the moment, but we will be back next season. I'm not making predictions, but we will finish higher that 15th next season."
