Rovers' shock tactics
Thursday, 12th August 1999.
HAVERHILL manager Danny Boyle has a clear game plan for the new season and it may come as a shock to Rover's opponents.
"We are trying not to be conventional ," he said Boyle.
"We are trying to do something a bit different. I don't want to say too much, but the teams we play against are going to be in for a bit of a surprise.
"Last season our target was to become hard to beat.
"This time we've upped the tempo a bit. Our battle cry is 'If you want to win the league, you've got to beat us."
Haverhill kick-off their Jewson League Division One programme on Saturday at Chatteris.
One side definitely looking to win the league are Ely. The Robins were relegated last season and new manager Steve Taylor reckons they can bounce straight back.
"I'm confident" he said. "Pre-season is going well and although I've used a lot of players, we are starting to look like a side. I'm sure we will be up there challenging right from the start."
Taylor has recruited eight new players so far, five of them joining from his former club Chatteris
Despite losing those players, new Lillies boss Mel Mattless is happy with his new look side.
"Thibgs are taking shape," he said. "It is a totally new side and I haven't finished signing players yet, but I'm happy with what I've got so far.
"Ely will definately be up there near the top, along with the teams from last year - Swaffam, Downham, Tiptree - but I'm confident we can mount a challenge."
Somersham finished just one off the bottom last season, and manager Bob Barnett is expecting an improvement.
"I'm quietly confident," he said. "I don't like to shout my mouth off at this time of year, so we will wait and see, but we've got some new players and we have still got the youngsters, and they are a year more experienced now."
Cambridge City reserves have re-entered the league and will be run by Jeremy George and Steve Gawthrop - who both tasted promotion success with Mildenhall last season.
