Rovers' 7-goal target
Thursday, 17th February 2000.
HAVERHILL Rovers face a tough run of games with three matches scheduled for a five day period, but manager Lee Barrett does have the consolation of a fully fit squad.
They face Brightlingsea United at home tonight in the group stage of the Eastern Floodlight Cup having already played Somersham at home on Tuesday evening.
Rovers need to beat Brightlingsea by seven clear goals in two matches to qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition, but Barrett fully intends to achieve this aim.
"We will definitely go out with the aim of qualifying for the last eight. They have one of the leakiest defenses in Division One, so it's not an impossible task."
Saffron Walden have already won the group, but if Rovers can achieve their target they would go through as the best runner-up.
Rovers face one of their toughest games of the season when they return to Jewson League action of Saturday with a trip to Division One leaders Tiptree United, but after a week of inactivity Barrett is looking forward to the challenge.
"They've got a couple of former Haverhill lads, Ian Fish and Neil Farley, in their side and I'm sure it will be a difficult game" said Barrett
"They beat us 3-0 at home earlier this season, but if we can apply ourselves correctly and get the break, we could still spring a surprise."
The postponement of Saturday's home match against Downham Town due to a waterlogged pitch came as something of a relief for Barrett, and should allow him to pick from a fully fit squad for the visit to the league leaders.
James Duke, Anthony Downs, Ian Spencer, Tony Botton and Phil Hammond were all struggling to be fit for the match, but they should all be available for this week's vital games.
