Rock contest final nears
Thursday, 23rd May 2002.
The Final of Haverhill Rock Competition will be held on Friday, May 31, with four very different bands lining up for the Battle of the Bands.
Heats in April and May were attended by almost 600 people, so the final is also expected to be a sell-out. Organisers advise buying tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
First up will be Public Outrage, with the raw new-metal sound that won them through on the audience vote. Second on the bill are three-piece rockers Oblivion, reaching the final for the third time.
Next are Cambridge punk band The Positives, with their 100mph set of old and new style punk. Finally, funk indie blues rockers Slingshot, who won the third heat on their debut performance, will take the stage.
The top band will win two days in a recording studio and a gig at the Arts Centre.
Rupert’s Tartan Scarf, last year’s winners, will perform while the votes are being counted.
Town council leisure manager Nick Keeble said the audience response so far had been immense, with four superb bands reaching the final.
He said: “The town council runs the competition to showcase the local talent and it’s been a good year for new and more established bands.”
The first band will be on stage at 8pm and tickets are £3.50, available from the box office on (01440) 714140.
