Residents urged to force by-election

By Martin Chapman on Friday, 7th June 2002.

An independent councillor is reminding residents of Haverhill of their democratic right to vote after two vacancies arose on Haverhill Town Council.

Residents of the Clements and St Mary’s & Helions Ward have until June 21st to force a by-election after the resignation of two councillors.

Mabon Dane, currently the only independent councillor on Haverhill Town Council fears the Labour dominated council would vote a member of their own party unless an election was called.

Speaking to Haverhill News On-Line, Mr Dane talked of his disgust over previous elections.

“The people of Haverhill have a democratic right to vote for an individual to serve them.”

Mr Dane went on to say: “I was personally dismayed when the existing councillors walked in to office unchallenged at the last elections.”

Cllr Dane said the only way of getting a greater voice for the residents of Haverhill was by electing more indepednt councillors.

He said “there is a great deal of anger and dismay by local residents that Haverhill gets second best to Bury with regard to facilities, service and funding.”

“Council’s where there is no good opposition can become complacent and in effective. As the only opposing councillor to Labour on the Haverhill Town Council there is only so much I can do on my own.”

For elections for the two wards to be called, ten electors from each ward must write to St Edmundsbury Borough Council to request an election by June 21st, 2002. If after this period no election is requested the vacancies will be filled by the current administration.
