Residents Hit Out At Extended Pub Hours
By Jo Deeksq on Thursday, 21st October 2004.
Patrons at a local pub will be allowed to go on dancing until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights for a trial period, despite objections from local residents and councillors.
An application to extend the public entertainment licence at the Bell pub in High Street, Haverhill, from 1am to 2am has been approved by members of St Edmundsbury Borough Council's licensing and regulatory committee for a four month trial period.
One resident of Wortham Place on the Chalkstone Estate said the 'amphitheatre effect' for housing on the hill behind the pub meant that noise was carried a long distance and was often louder than in the High Street.
"Late night revellers often pass our house smashing bottles and shouting," the resident wrote in a letter to the council.
"There is also enough anti-social behaviour already and often a requirement for policing."
Borough councillors Gordon Cox and Ernie Goody objected to the extension. Coun Cox said current drinking hours were more than adequate and that licensees should show more responsibility by not allowing patrons to drink to excess.
"An extension to the present hours would mean a strong likelihood of further late night disruptions to the comminity when patrons make their way home in the early hours," Coun Cox said.
Coun Goody said the issue had been raised at the Chalkstone Residents Association, where residents of wortham Place said they were plagued with noise from the Bell.
Suffolk Police said the Bell's landlord, Ryan Churchward, had run the establishment well, but there were concerns that he may be leaving and it was not known who his replacement would be.
"It is important that the correct manager is in place when such a request is made. The additional hours drinking time can lead to potentially increased disorder and police need confidence in the management that the premises will be effectively run," a police spokesman said.
