Residents’ group calls for more members
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 24th January 2002.
A residents association in Haverhill’s largest housing estate is hoping to get more people to discuss issues such as plans for a new drop-in centre.
Peter Watkins, secretary of the New Clements Residents Association, said they were disappointed with the attendance at their recent AGM of only half a dozen people/
The committee was re-elected and agreed to carry on for another six months, but Mr Watkins aid the group desperately needed some new members, particularly some younger ones.
“We were rather disappointed, because there are some important matters which people ought to be aware of,” said Mr Watkins.
“We have been talking for the past year about trying to get a drop-in centre at the newsagents. It would offer youngsters advice about drugs and alcohol and could be use by the CAB.
“we need a lot more people and we need young people, it is always the same old faces. There are a lot of people on the estate who like to moan, but they won’t even pick up the telephone and ring a freephone number to report a light that is not working.
“perhaps they are all happy with what we are doing, but there are things they should be aware of.”
Last year the group campaigned against the plans to cut hours at the Clements surgery. These were later abandoned and plans have now been put forward to build a new surgery on the estate.
The next meeting of the association will be on February 28 at 7:30 pm at the Leiston Social Centre.
Everyone is welcome to attend or for more information about the group ring Mr Watkins on (01440) 704797.
