Replacement of Withersfield Road bungalows to go ahead

Tuesday, 13th August 2013.

A terrace of six 1960s bungalows will be demolished and replaced with new homes, as part of a controversial Havebury Housing Partnership development.

The social housing provider received planning permission from St Edmundsbury Borough Council last week to build 27 new homes to the front of Withersfield Road in Haverhill and the land behind.

The homes will be targeted at the over 55s and will meet the housing needs of tenants currently residing at William Blake Court.

Scott Bailey, head of development at Havebury Housing Partnership, said: “This new development will allow older tenants to live in an area where they access a number of local amenities such as shops, library and supermarket.

“Delivering new, high quality affordable housing for our tenants is one of our top priorities at Havebury and this is just one of a number of new developments we have coming to fruition this year providing much needed affordable homes in the area.”

The development will consist of 14 one-bedroom flats, five one-bedroom bungalows and four two-bedroom flats. There will also be two lifts available to residents.

The plan was controversial because residents protested about use of the land behind, on the other side of the Stour Brook. They called for some important trees on the site to be retained and for an old trackway, Occupation Road, to be preserved.

Objectors to the plans packed into a Haverhill Town Council planning committee meeting earlier this year and got the council's backing for their concerns.

There was also concern the overgrown area across the brook was the habitat of dormice, which are protected.

But St Edmundsbury planners decided the concerns did not outweigh the need for the new housing.

Demolition of the bungalows is expected to take place in autumn this year and the new development is anticipated to be completed by December 2014.
