Reds go on the rampage
Thursday, 4th October 2001.
FIVE first-half goals gave on-song Haverhill the points in their 5 – 0 rout at struggling Brightlingsea – with Paul Jenkin and Adie Hunt both scoring pairs and Mark Brandt netting one, and having another ruled out for offside.
Paul Miles, ran the Jewson League Division One game in the midfield, wjile Alex Clarke kept it tight at the back for Rovers.
Haverhill Manager Paul Goodman said: “In the second half Brightlingsea were a little bit more organised and made it difficult for us, but the good thing is we didn’t concede.
It’s very difficult when you’ve got the job done, but we managed to keep our concentration.”
The Red’s interest in the FA Carlsberg Vase ended against Mildenhall in last week’s replay.
A goal from Stuart Ogilvie in the 68th minute was enough to separate the sides who had drawn 1 – 1 in the first game at Mildenhall.
Disappointed Goodman said: “I think it was always going to come down to something special – because the teams were so evenly matched.
“I thought to be honest we just shaded it in. We had a lot of the play. That was one of the best games we have had here in years.
“I am so proud of my team. Although we lost, I think that will kick start our season.”
Rovers made the more impressive start to the match and keeper Alex Thorpe denied the hosts three times in 15 minutes.
But once Ogilive made the breakthrough with a twice taken free kick, chances were few and far between for Rovers.
