Red Cross pays tribute to PC's cycling classes
Tuesday, 21st June 2011.
A Haverhill policeman was presented with a citation by the town's branch of the Red Cross for his work teaching children how to cycle safely.
PC Will Wright received the presentation from Alex Keep of the Red Cross, who paid tribute to the work PC Wright had done in his own time in setting up classes for pupils at middle schools.
"This work dovetailed with work the Red Cross is doing on road safety, and we thought it worthy of a commendation," said Mr Keep.
Mr Keep and members of the Red Cross helped out at PC Wright's classes, which have taught 72 children so far, and will continue next year even though the middle schools will no longer be there.
PC Wright said he would be working with both upper and primary schools to cover the 9-13 age bracket at which children have been found most susceptible to learning good practice.
PC Wright also raised the money to buy 100 cycling helmets which has has been giving out top pupils.
"We have been working hard to get rid of the stigma that exists among youngsters about wearing a cycling helmet, so had them produced in school uniform colours," said PC Wright.
