Ramraiders strike at village post office
Thursday, 10th January 2002.
RAMRAIDERS have attacked the Post Office at Kedington, near Haverhill, for the second time in two years, but the owners have vowed to carry on.
Mary and Peter Upson have run the newsagent and post office at The Parade, Kedington, for the past 13 years and were still serving customers this week despite their battered shop front caused by a ram raid over the weekend.
Cigarettes, game cards and cash were stolen by the raiders, who struck between noon on Sunday and 5.30am on Monday. Extensive damage estimated at £500 was caused to the front of the shop.
In March 2000 robbers armed with a shotgun and a sledgehammer burst into the shop and stole cash.
Mrs Upson said they were determined not to let the raiders win by forcing them to leave their shop, even though the raids were upsetting.
"We never close," she said. "We were sorting out papers and selling them through the front of the shop this morning.
"We had it easy for a long while, it has just been in the last couple of years we have had these raids."
A Suffolk police spokesman confirmed they were investigating the incident and appealed to anyone who had seen anything suspicious, or had any information, to contact Haverhill police on (01284) 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
