Rail renewal enthusiasts hold meeting in Haverhill
Wednesday, 24th November 2010.
A public meeting will be held in Haverhill tomorrow evening for anyone interested in the efforts to revive the town's railway link.
The Cambridge-Sudbury Rail Renewal Association is holding a meeting at Haverhill Arts Centre at 7.30pm, as part of its ongoing efforts to get government organisations to take an interest in its work.
Early feasibility studies have been carried out over recent years and the association raised a huge petition which was delivered in the Hopuse of Commons by former MP Richard Spring.
Only last week the leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Cllr John Griffiths, said the council was fundamentally in favour of the idea, but that it was impossibly expensive.
The council's chief executive Geoff Rivers said it was unrealistically unlikely to ever happen, but that a guided bus system from Haverhill to Cambridge was 'within the realms of possibility'.
The railway line was axed by Dr Beeching in the early 1960s and finally closed to all traffic in 1967, since which time much of it has been built over, sold off or destroyed.
