RAF causes stir near playground
Thursday, 20th January 2000.
A NEW attraction appeared next to the children's playground at the Motts Field in Haverhill when an RAF helicopter landed there.
The Lynx Mark 7 helicopter, probably worth around £2 million, spent the night alongside the football pitches after making an unscheduled landing at around 7pm.
A spokesman for RAF Wattisham, Suffolk, from where the helicopter had come on a routine training flight, said it did not make an emergency landing, but was landed as a precaution after developing a technical problem.
Three airmen were sent from RAF Wattisham to set up camp and guard the valuable aircraft and said it attracted considerable attention from local children.
The helicopter could not be flown and was taken away by trailer the next day to be examined to see what was wrong with it.
The spokesman said it was quite rare for such a landing to be made, as the helicopters are normally very reliable.
