Quinney sets new Haverhill course record of 66

The men’s midweek medal was played at Haverhill Golf Club on Wednesday, June 8, and the event produced a new course record for Dave Quinney, with an impressive gross score of 66.

Dave was, however, just beaten on countback for the overall win by Chris Vince, with a nett 66.

The full results were: Division One, 1 Chris Vince 69-3-66 on countback, 2 Dave Quinney 66-0-66 (new course record), 3 Jonathan Moore 81-11-70.

Division Two, 1 Michael Barnham 83-16-67, 2 Geoff Bush 85-18-67, 3 Andrew Gage 83-15-68.

Division Three, 1 Gary Currel 92-26-66, 2 Mark Hilton 92-28i-64, 3 Antony Choat 93-25-68.

On Thursday, June 9, the men’s Stableford was played and it was an overall win for Richard Grant with a great score of 44pts, who has had his handicap trimmed by two shots.

The full results were: Division One, 1 Haverhill junior Liam Merritt with 40pts, who as a result has had his handicap cut by one1 shot to seven, 2 Mick Warren 38pts and 3 Harvey Bavester 36pts.

Division Two, 1 Frank Robertson 39pts, 2 Wayne Smith 37pts and 3 Paul Donno 36pts.

Division Three, 1 Richard Grant 44pts, 2 Tony Beasley 40pts and 3 John Condon 37pts.

The Ladies Medal was played on Saturday, June 4, and Mary Sail was back to winning ways with a very commendable 87-17-70. In second place was Catie Heathfield with 94-23-71, and in third place Anna Fairhead with 93-20-73.

On Thursday, June 9, the ladies played the Ping competition, a four ball better ball stableford event. The winning pair were Mary Sail and Jackie Condon with 42pts, in second place Sarah Field and Linda Bugg with 41pts and in third place Lady Vice Captain,Doreen Darbey and Denise Walker with 40pts.

Haverhill Ladies were drawn at home for a rain-soaked return fixture of their county Weston match against the Suffolk on Friday, June 10. In difficult conditions, the Haverhill team just had the edge and won 3-2.

The full results were: Mary Sail lost 1 down against Angie Lewis, Pat Kennedy won 5&3 against Trisha Mortlock, Jackie Condon won 5&4 against Bernie Bugg, Denise Walker lost on the 1st play off hole to Karoline Chan and Anna Fairhead won 2&1 against Kerry Lee.

Haverhill golfers got up bright and early for a 5.30am shotgun start for the Midsummer Madness competition, run by the social committee.

In all, 60 competitors took part in the four ball team event, with three scores to count on each hole. The winners were Rob Viney, Chris Shipp, Geoff Gallaway and Steve Chandler with 132pts.

In second place were Dave Perrett, Mick Warren, Lyndon Brown and Neville Felton with 123pts on countback from 3rd place Scott Turner, Roger Turner, David Johnson and Harvey Bavester with 123pts. Afterwards the golfers all enjoyed a well deserved full English breakfast in the clubhouse!

On Sunday, June 12, the men’s medal and third leg of the Cecil Darken competition took place, the early bird golfers having the best of the weather, which deteriorated considerably by lunchtime.

Winning overall with a fabulous round of golf was Sean Doyle with 89-24-65 and as a result he has had his handicap cut by three shots.

The full results were: Division One, 1 Steve Miller 81-11-70 on countback from 2 Liam Merritt 77-7-70 (lowest gross after countback), 3 Derek Thomas 82-9-73.

Division Two, 1 Tim Daniels 79-13-66, 2 Richard Mansfield 84-16-68, 3 Allen O’Donoghue 89-20-69.

Division Three, 1 Sean Doyle 89-24-65, 2 R Haylock 92-21i-71, 3 Geoff Gallaway 97-25-72.

The winner of the Cecil Darken Trophy (best 2 rounds played from April, May and June medals) was Andy Softley on countback with 71-69-140, just edging out second place Geoff Gallaway with 68-72-140.

The June Smith Silver Salver was played on Sunday, June 12. Lady vice-captain Doreen Darbey battled through to a comprehensive victory with 38pts, despite the very wet weather conditions, and has now had her handicap reduced by one shot.

In second place was Pat Kennedy with 33pts and in third place Jane Herrington with 30pts.

Haverhill’s Chris Vince finished in third place at the 36-hole Suffolk Amateur Championship held on Sunday, June 12, at Hintlesham Golf Club. The results were: 1 N Overton from Hintlesham with a gross score of 69-73 (playing off +1), 2 S Debenham from Hintlesham with 73-70 (playing off +2) and in third place Chris Vince from Haverhill 70-73 (playing off a handicap of 3).
